Effectively supporting and accompanying cancer therapies

Liquid Biopsy offers new perspectives in cancer treatment. With blood tests, cancer can be monitored, therapies can be checked for their effectiveness and changes in tumor behavior can be detected at an early stage. This allows the therapy to be individually adapted to ensure the most effective treatment possible - an important step towards a sustainable cancer treatment.

Despite major advances in research, the fight against cancer remains a major medical challenge. Since each tumor is unique, it should be possible to tailor cancer treatment to the individual patient. Blood tests (liquid biopsies) are an innovative approach. These tests are non-invasive; a simple blood sample is sufficient to monitor cancer treatment and detect relapse at an early stage.

Blood as the key

Cellular remnants from tumors, known as circulating cancer cells, circulate in the blood. They have detached from a tumour and can remain in the bloodstream for a long time, spreading throughout the body. Their number and characteristics provide information not only about the current status of the patient's own cancer, but also about how the tumour responds to treatment and changes. By testing active substances, such as chemotherapeutics, directly on tumour cells in the laboratory, it is possible to determine whether certain therapies are effective. For example, an increase in tumour cells can be a warning signal that the cancer is continuing to grow despite treatment - or that the treatment should be adjusted.

Keeping an eye on aggressive cells

Particularly stubborn cells, known as cancer stem cells, are very resistant to many therapies and are therefore difficult to target. These cells often survive treatment, remain in the body and can lead to relapse years later. By identifying and monitoring circulating cancer stem cells in the blood, it is possible to assess not only the aggressiveness of a tumour, and therefore how quickly the cancer could spread in the body, but also how effective the cancer treatment is against the cancer stem cells themselves. This means that cancer treatment can be more efficiently controlled and individually tailored to prevent relapse at an early stage.

Personalised medicine

maintrac® and stemtrac® - two methods from the globally active laboratory Dr. Pachmann in Bayreuth, Germany - offer a new perspective in cancer treatment by combining blood tests with an individually tailored therapy approach. By testing the cancer cells and cancer stem cells circulating in the blood, treatment becomes more flexible, more controlled and more patientcentred. Our aim is to help patients find an individual, personalised and effective therapy and to monitor its success.
