We sat down with Dr. Joachim Fluhrer, who attended and presented at the ACNEM Annual Conference, held 3–4 July 2025, in Melbourne, Australia, to hear about the highlights of this year’s event.
For those unfamiliar, what is the ACNEM Annual Conference?
Dr. Fluhrer: ACNEM (the Australian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine) is the leading medical college for integrative medicine in Australia and New Zealand. Each year, the Annual Conference brings together practitioners and researchers from around the world. This year’s theme was Cancer, and the conference drew strong national and international participation, both in person and online.
What stood out to you in the program?
Dr. Fluhrer: I was invited to present one of the keynotes with the topic “The Biology of Cancer”. It was an in-depth exploration of the mechanisms driving cancer and really set the tone for the discussions that followed. Prof. Charlie Teo presented current and new approaches for intracranial tumours for curative surgery and re-training of the brain with ElectroMagnetic Therapies. Other presentations included personalised approaches, the interactions of SOC therapies with botanicals and an update on Cannabis Medicines. The audience was highly stimulated and very appreciative of all the presenters.
You also presented research at the conference. Can you tell us more?
Dr. Fluhrer: Yes, I presented a poster on maintrac® and stemtrac®, showcasing results from a clinical study. The key finding was the strong correlation between overall patient outcomes and the presence of tumour stem cells. This sparked a lot of discussion, as for many participants the maintrac® approach was new. The importance of identifying and monitoring tumour stem cells was widely acknowledged as a significant step forward.
Were you also involved in the exhibition side of the event?
Dr. Fluhrer: That’s right. Together with Genostics Australia, we exhibited the maintrac® services of Pachmann GmbH & Co. KG and explained the logistics available for Australian practitioners. It was a great way to engage with clinicians interested in applying these technologies in practice.
What’s your overall impression of the 2025 ACNEM Conference?
Dr. Fluhrer: It was an excellent event - very well organised, with engaging presentations, meaningful discussions and valuable opportunities for collaboration. It really highlighted the growing role of integrative medicine in advancing cancer care.
